Matter of Speaking

Hello! So. An update!

I'm graduated! Thanks. And I am now broke and indebt with school loans! However, more so indebted to my new art works and well, let us say my heart is furthest from being broken. Finances; i've always been good at keeping my head above water.

Okay i decided not to shoot for the BFA at WWU and instead am shooting for a cohesive body of work that I can display in 3 months. This is allowing a chance to build a portfolio for a masters program. I feel confident, I have the support of a few facutly members, artist and studio peers, friends, and family. I feel alright. I gave myself a deadline (first weekend in august!)- and i'm not sure how i'm going to afford it but I have a feeling everything will fall into place. Naive? I've never been happier being blinded.

I used my tax refund to pay 3 months rent in advance for a studio. I thought, "Hell, if i don't do it now, when?" So here I go.

Here are a couple of images from the studio. One is the progression of adam and the other is the first layer of jenny. The show will be called "A Matter of Speaking"- I'm painting friends midsentence-when guards are usually down and they are presented in a moment lost in there head searching through thoughts to find points or words to articulate themselves. Just as I search their portrait and canvas to find the correct matter of paint to articulate a visual language to describe my friends. The idea of "matter of speaking" is developing further in my head as each layer of paint is applied- so who knows what it has in store for me. Its a mystery.

If you have any opinions, critiques, encouragements, outlandish comments....let'em at me. Thanks for viewing. (these pics were taken from my sweet model LG verizon phone)

This quarter is coming to a close. It has been a long and busy and thoughtful and productive journey. I've been stretching myself thin between work and school. However this has been the most gratifying quarter i've had here at Western. In my Proffessional Studies class we have been all over Seattle talking with artists, such as Susan Zoccola, museum/exhibitions curators like Beth Sellers, and many galleries in Seattle and Bellingham. This class not only gave me chance to think of the preparation it will take to pursue in art, we purposed an installation idea to the Western's business school and deligated the work and finished the installation this past week. In my advance siminar class the senior and BFA students hosted a show at the Ground Floor on N. State St during Bellingham's Art Walk this friday. The place was packed for a the full 2 hours and included a performance piece by Maryanne Mishuno and her partner. It was great to see people from the community coming and asking about the program and the pieces themselves; it felt really good to hear their encouragements. And finally my friends saw the work! I'm always so hesitant when a barrier is about to be broken and two worlds collide. It was great to have my friends be their for the reception. I have the worst fear showing my work. My friends tell me to relax and i that i'm too hard on myself, but it's my invention and i am my worst critique. Well before I ramble more here are more paintings from the past and present. Enjoy!

This quarter I focused on Amy Sillman. This was my first assignment my human figure painting class with Cynthia Camlin.
